John Flynn Place wins National Trust Heritage Award

ToadShow client John Flynn Place in Cloncurry has won Gold for Heritage Interpretation in the 2015 National Trust Queensland Heritage Awards.

The Gold Award recognises ToadShow's major upgrade to John Flynn Place, a much-loved outback museum celebrating the birth of the Australian Inland Mission and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The award citation said:

"The project, with an excellent combination of exhibition and research, tells many diverse aspects of the story of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It included strong community engagement and collaboration and achieved very high technical standards."

Working closely with Honorary Curator Dr Judith McKay, ToadShow managed the project, designed the exhibits and installed them in Cloncurry. Utilising the latest screen-based display technologies, the exhibits include:

  • Honouring Outback Heroes - the stories of four remarkable people who served in the First World War, sponsored by the Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants Program
  • Roll of Honour - celebrating the hundreds of dedicated people who served as Queensland field staff of the Australian Inland Mission and the Flying Doctor Service
  • Wings over the Inland - a fascinating showcase of the many aircraft used by the Flying Doctor Service from its earliest times to the present day
  • Remembering Birdsville's Sister Gilbert - commemorates the brief life of a nurse at the Mission's Birdsville Hospital who died at only 29 years of age.
  • John Flynn Place - a timely addition recording the museum's history and its dedicated people
  • John Flynn's Magic Lantern Slideshow - recreates Flynn's personal slideshow, a highlight of his promotional work around Australia
  • Ernest Henry Outback Theatre - a micro-cinema with six historic films about the Mission and the Flying Doctor Service, sponsored by a local mine
